Australia vs West Indies in Perth

Goodbye from Perth

By Simon Smale

Well, that was an enthralling Test match.

The scorecard will tell you that Australia did that pretty easily — only losing six wickets while scoring 780 runs and bowling out their opponents twice, but the numbers don't say how hard Australia had to work for that win.

The West Indies held themselves together really well, and in Taganarine Chanderpaul they've unearthed a real talent at the top of the order.

Roston Chase was excellent in the second innings, scoring 55 hard-earned runs along with Alzarri Joseph.

Of course, Nathan Lyon (8-189 match figures) and Marnus Labuschagne (204 and 104*) take the headlines for Australia - although Steve Smith also deserves credit for his 200* and 20*.

There are questions for both teams fitness wise ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, a pink ball Test starting Thursday, but we'll worry about those later in the week.

We'll be back for that Test on Thursday, hope to see you then.

Cummins still reckons he could've bowled if needed

By Jon Healy

The Aussie skipper's fitness will be closely watched over the next few days. He says he was ready to bowl if the game got a bit tighter.

"[The injury] feels fine, just trying to be a little protective."

And as far as starting the next Test in Adelaide.

"Hope so. I feel pretty strong. I'll test it over the next couple of days and [have my] fingers crossed."

Follow-on?

By Jon Healy

Of they had enforced the follow on they would have won by an innings for sure!!! No guts .....no glory!!!

- Sir Wally Wombat

Alternatively, more bowlers would have broken down after really long days in the field.

Australia wins! Lyon bowls Kemar Roach to finish it off!

By Jon Healy

Key Event

Nathan Lyon finishes with 6-128, and two in a row to end the match, clean bowling Roach first ball.

Marnus Labuschagne will be player of the match for his 308 runs, but that was a good final dig from Lyon to get the team over the line on day five.

The Aussies would have wanted to wrap this up faster than they did, but you have to bear in mind they were without their captain and best bowler, Pat Cummins, for that second innings.

"He just came up and said thanks to me just then, but hopefully he'll be right for Adelaide," Lyon tells Fox Sports.

Eyes certainly turn now to Cummins and whether he'll back up on Thursday for the day-night Test in Adelaide, remembering there are three more Tests after that against South Africa.

Chase finally falls to a cracking Starc catch, and Lyon has five!

By Jon Healy

Key Event

He went for one shot too many over the leg side and this time didn't get all of it, and Mitchell Starc came racing in from deep mid-wicket to take and impressive catch diving forward.

That's Nathan Lyon's fifth wicket for the innings and one they really wanted, because Chase was frustrating this attack.

11th over - Chase facing Lyon

By Jon Healy

Whack! Easy as you like, the number eight just lifts over mid-wicket for four.

And then a ball straightens and beats the outside edge. Good response from Lyon.

Chase gets a half-century

By Jon Healy

The tail-ender has been impressive and showing some real class and grit to annoy the hell out of the Aussie bowlers, who thought they were just going to coast to victory this afternoon.

110th over - Heading back in

By Jon Healy

The part-timer always sneaks one past the inside edge of Chase, who's fending a long way away from his body.

And he finds it! But it spits away past Marnus at short leg for a couple.

109th over - Lyon tries again

By Jon Healy

Chase slaps him down the ground and they take the single. I was surprised Chase wasn't farming the strike, but now I see why - this Seales bloke looks really tidy and compact in his technique.

He finishes the over bowling over the wicket to the left-hander, and Seales is happy to pad away to bowls either pitching outside leg or sailing harmlessly across him.

108th over - Windies standing strong at 8-322

By Jon Healy

Travis Head is bowling with only two fielders close to the pat, slip and short leg. Not aggressive enough.

As a result, he has to sprint and make a diving stop when Seales drives towards mid-off.

107th over - Lyon to Seales

By Jon Healy

An awkward defensive shot ends up on the leg side and Carey slaps it back into the stumps. No danger, although Marnus Labuschagne loses his mind at bat-pad on the off side.

Cheeky two off the pads by Seales.

He makes it through again.

106th over - Head is back, because of course

By Jon Healy

Chase goes the tonk, trying to loft back over the bowler's head but the bat spins in his hand and it chunks over wide mid-off for two.

Oh, he goes the big swing again outside off and misses everything this time. Even if he did edge it, that would take some real catching.

Seales pushes to the off side and takes a single to end the over, farming the strike for some reason. Interesting that they're not shielding the number 10.

105th over - Lyon is back, searching for a five-wicket haul

By Jon Healy

Chase belts him into the deep on the slog sweep. He takes a single, so he's not protecting Jayden Seales.

Seales sees out the rest of the over.

Bowled him! Travis Head makes the difference!

By Simon Smale

Key Event

Oh there you go!

Travis Head sees a ball go straight on and it's cannoned into Alzarri Joseph's off stump and his brave stand comes to an end.

He scores 43 off 72 balls.

We'll have a drink and Jon Healy will see out the last two wickets.

104th over - It's Travis time! Head is the bowling change

By Simon Smale

Four! Alzarri Joseph drives square off the back foot, very nice shot through deep point.

Better from Head, he gets the ball to turn in a bit and gets the inside edge.

Joseph swings and misses!

EDGED! Dropped by Carey! There was an edge and it's hit him on the forearm.

103rd over - Josh Hazlewood will bowl another

By Simon Smale

Wide outside off, a bit of shape, left well alone.

Outside off again, left alone, again.

This time Hazlewood overcorrects and sends it down leg, close to the bat that swished across the line, but no contact and no run.

Wide outside off, Chase leaves.

We've been shown a graphic that says Australia's quicks would only have gone on to hit the stumps 16 times - compared to 112 that would not today. Not good enough really.

Chase defends out a maiden.

102nd over - Nathan Lyon bowls

By Simon Smale

Chase hits back to Lyon for no run.

He fends to cover now. No run again.

Four! Lovely shot through the covers and that's another four runs. Well played, nicely timed.

A single past bat pad to square leg.

Joseph defends the last couple.

101st over - Hazlewood continues

By Simon Smale

Chase defends the first to short midwicket.

Chase will take a couple of runs.

EDGED! Safe! Oh my that was so close to falling into Cameron Green's massive hands at gully.

Chase is defending solidly here.

Just a tap off his pads and a chase for Pat Cummins, WHY IS HE OUT THERE! He can't really run even! Surely he's not going to bowl at all. This feels just so foolish.

They ran a couple.

100th over - Nathan Lyon

By Simon Smale

Chase takes a single off Lyon.

SIX! Alzarri Joseph hammers his third six over deep long on - it went a mile in the air but had enough distance to get over the boundary!

Slip, leg slip and bat pad as Joseph edges between the two latter positions and David Warner can't chase it down! Four!

Oh that's popped up in the air right to short cover - there's no fielder there though and it falls safe.

This is a great counter attack from this pair, Joseph in particular.
