Manly eliminates the Sharks, Raiders stun the Storm

Manly has ended Cronulla's season and Paul Gallen's career with a comfortable win in their elimination final at Brookvale Oval.

Earlier, the Raiders scored a rare finals win on the road, beating the Storm in a dramatic qualifying final in Melbourne.

Leilua the spark for stunning Raiders' win

The qualifying final between Melbourne Storm and the Canberra Raiders began in chaotic scenes, as centre Joey Leilua was struck in the eye with a piece of shell from the pre-match fireworks.

With three minutes left, the same man gave a reverse pass to John Bateman to put his Raiders' teammate under the posts for the winning try as Canberra stunned the Storm 12-10 to reach the NRL preliminary final.

Leilua was among the Raiders who ran onto the field as the fireworks went off. After a couple of minutes he walked off and looked in distress on the sideline — the start of the game was delayed while he was attended by medical staff.

In the end, he went down to the rooms, and Bailey Simonsson had to replace Leilua in the starting side.

In another dramatic turn, the Raiders quieted the Melbourne crowd after three minutes when they went in for the opening try, scored by none other than Simonsson.

Leilua had a piece of pyrotechnic shell removed from his eye, before emerging to sit on the bench, while still touching the affected area.

He came on midway through the first half for Nic Cotric, who came off bleeding heavily after catching a stray boot to the face while trying to tackle full-back Ryan Papenhuyzen.

Cotric was found to have a broken nose and failed a HIA, leaving the Raiders a man down on the bench.

Canberra looked set to add to the lead when Jordan Rapana scored with 13 minutes to go in the half — but the try was ruled out for offside.

Jarrod Croker then steered a penalty just wide of the posts with under five to go before the break.

Then Canberra gave away a penalty five metres out with less than a minute to go - the Raiders held out until seven seconds left when they conceded another penalty right in front of the posts for a chicken wing tackle.

The Storm took the points to trail 6-2 at the half. The home side had been unusually quiet in attack, with no line breaks in the opening 40 minutes, and 60 fewer metres gained than Canberra.

The second half was a very different story. Melbourne drew level within two minutes of the restart with a try to speedster Suliasi Vunivalu, then four minutes later they were in front thanks to a Cameron Smith penalty.

Another penalty made it 10-6 to the Storm after 50 minutes, but a key moment came 10 minutes later, when Leilua was put in to score a try, only for it to be ruled out for a forward pass from Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.

Storm coach Craig Bellamy was left fuming minutes later when his side blew a perfect opportunity close to the Raiders line when a set play went wrong, as Will Chambers gave away a penalty for obstruction.

The tension mounted when Canberra did the exact same when threatening to score at the other end 90 seconds later.

Neither side was able to deliver the telling blow, but time was running out for the Raiders.

Suddenly, the Raiders had the Storm close to their line. Melbourne tried to run the ball out, but the ball sprang free and Leilua pounced, running cross-field before flicking it to Bateman who ran in to score.

It took a long review by the bunker, but the score stood.

There was still time for more drama, with Vunivalu wrongly called in touch off a high ball — then with seconds left, the Storm were forced to boot a desperation kick downfield, only for the ball to bounce backwards over everyone's heads and fall for the Raiders to run it over the sideline and end the game.

The result means the Raiders get the week off and advance to the preliminary final, while the Storm will face a sudden-death final against the Broncos or the Eels.
