Tasmania Now: $50k human waste dump approved by council, dead whale hit by ship

Here's what you need to know this morning:

Whale killed after collision with ship

A whale of a species rarely seen in Tasmania washed up on a beach after it apparently collided with a ship.

Authorities said the dead Cuvier's beaked whale was found at Clifton Beach, south east of Hobart earlier in the week, with an examination finding the animal had "injuries consistent with ship strike".

The Marine Conservation Program (MCP) said it had investigated a "number of stranded whales over the last month".

"It is not unusual to have reports of deceased whales at various times, with some animals stranding due to illness or other causes and others having died at sea and been washed ashore. Investigations of the three recent strandings have indicated they are not related."

The necropsy results from a female pilot whale found stranded at Cloudy Bay on Bruny Island over the weekend suggested the stranding was the "result of complication and an infection associated with a pregnancy", MCP said in a statement.

MCP biologists also assessed a juvenile humpback whale found dead on Schouten Island last month as "clearly emaciated".

MCP said as the "humpback whale population increases, it is not unusual to see a number of juvenile humpbacks strand in poor condition each season, a sad but natural occurrence".

Pedestrian bridge officially named

The Brooker Avenue pedestrian bridge — which links Bathurst Street with the Queens Domain on the fringe of Hobart's CBD — has been officially named Rose Garden Bridge.

Alternative names floated by stakeholders included the Kitty Henry Bridge in honour of the renowned garden designer and florist, and the TT Flynn Walkway — a nod to Tasmania's first professor of biology and Errol Flynn's father.

Vote to fund human waste dump

Hobart's Park and Recreation committee has voted unanimously to consider funding a 'blackwater' facility, which would be a dumping point for human waste from recreational vehicles.

The proposed facility would be built at Selfs Point Road near Rugby Park at New Town.

It would cost $50,000 to build and $6,500 in annual expenses.

There is currently no public option for motorhomes to dump human waste within the municipality.

Weather

Today, showers are predicted around coastal areas and in the western, central and southern districts in the afternoon, extending to the east coast in the evening.

Snowfall is predicted to about 700 metres.

On Saturday, snowfall is expected to lower to about 500 metres in the south and west during the evening.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

As of 6:00am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was closed at The Springs.

Check the council website for the updated status of Pinnacle Road.
