Live: Tasmania Now: Turnaround for state economy, motorcyclist caught travelling 173 kph

Tasmania is ranked first on relative population growth, housing finance and business investment.

Here's what you need to know this morning:

Tasmanian economy third best performer

Tasmania has the third best performing economy in the country, behind New South Wales and Victoria, a report reveals.

The CommSec report measures the performance of state economies based on eight indicators.

Tasmania is ranked first on relative population growth, housing finance and business investment, and is in second place on dwelling starts.

The data reveals Tasmania's population growth rate of 1.24 per cent is the fastest in 27 years.

Driver in critical condition

Police remain at the scene of a serious crash between a truck and a car on the Bass Highway at Boat Harbour, near the turnoff to Port Road, in the state's north-west.

Police said the male driver of the car was transported by Ambulance Tasmania to the North West Regional Hospital in a critical condition.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Police had advised the scene is now clear and traffic is flowing normally.

The Westpac rescue helicopter was dispatched but was not required, police said.

Motorcyclist caught doing 173kph in 100 zone

Police nabbed a motorcyclist travelling 173 kilometres per hour in a 100-kilometre zone in the state's north yesterday afternoon.

Police say the 35-year-old man was travelling with a group of other motorcyclists riding south along Biralee Road in Biralee when he was intercepted.

Officers seized the man's motorbike for 28 days and say the man will be summoned to attend court.

The rider is also facing a fine of more than $3,000 and a minimum four months' license disqualification.

Police say they are inquiring into another member of the group who was speeding at 143 kilometres per hour.

Notorious intersection to get $5m upgrade

Work will soon commence on a $5 million upgrade of the notorious Mowbray Connector intersection in Launceston.

The upgrade includes the installation of a roundabout to replace the current turn-off at the intersection of the East Tamar Highway and Mowbray Link.

Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson said work at the intersection which was prone to crashes would begin next month.

"There is a crash history here on this intersection. We know that it's not always the road's fault but we do need to design our roads so we can ensure human error is reduced to an absolute minimum," he said.

Pill testing momentum builds

Momentum is growing for a pill testing trial in Tasmania — possibly as soon as the next Falls Festival.

Tasmania's Upper House will debate a motion next month and call on the State Government to allow a trial in Tasmania.

Independent member of the Legislative Council Ruth Forrest, who put forward the motion, said there was a lot of misinformation about pill testing.

"A lot of people don't actually understand what it is or what it does and actually how it's carried out," she said.

"So I think it's actually important to get that on the public record."

Weather

There's a gale warning for southeastern coastal waters, from Tasman Island to South East Cape.

There's a strong wind warning for remaining southern and eastern waters from St Helens Point to Low Rocky Point.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

As of 6:30am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was closed at The Springs.

Check the council website for the updated status of Pinnacle Road.
