Tasmania Now: Police called over dog 'bone' trap, NBL want public money for DEC

Here's how the morning unfolded:

Mongrel act at dog park

The row over an off-the-leash dog park in Hobart's north has escalated, with allegations cooked chicken bones — which can pose a choking hazard to carnivores — have been planted deliberately at the site to deter owners from taking their pets there.

A social media post from the Tasmanian Lost Pet Register Facebook page has alleged that two dogs ate the bones in the park yesterday, but it did not say if the animals were harmed.

The park had recently been approved for off-leash dog access between 9.00am and 7.00pm.

Reactions to the post were strong, with one local calling for "surveillance cameras to be put up" and demanding the culprit "be caught and have some consequences".

It's the latest incident in a long-running saga for the reserve, after human poo was discovered in August last year in protest dogs being allowed to use the area while unrestrained.

Tasmania to get NBL 10th licence

A Tasmanian team will be re-admitted into the National Basketball League pending a partnership being struck between the league and state government.

League owner Larry Kestelman has confirmed that the league's 10th licence would be granted to a Tasmanian franchise, breaking (NBL) an almost 25-year absence from the competition.

Mr Kestelman has struck a unanimous deal with Glenorchy City Council to enter into an exclusive negotiation process with him to buy the Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) precinct as a base for the team.

But Mr Kestelman said the DEC, built in 1989, would need a "significant upgrade so it can be brought up to world class standard for players and fans".

"We would look to the State Government to support this upgrade and the team moving forward," he said.

Salmon industry rate hike a 'cash grab'

The Tasmanian Salmon Growers Association has labelled the West Coast Council's proposal to increase rates on the salmon industry by 1,400 percent "a cash grab".

A council proposal would see an increase in rates for the industry's on-land assets jump from several thousand dollars a year to about $70,000 a year.

The association's executive officer Andrew Gregson said the reasons provided by the council were based on flawed logic.

"If this cash-grab from the West Coast Council is successful, it gives licence to other council's around Tasmania to target businesses with drastic rate increases on a whim," he said.

19th century Macquarie House makeover

Historic Launceston property Macquarie House has been given a new lease on life.

The 1829 four-level sandstone brick building has been fully restored and will be used as an entrepreneurship and technology hub for the city.

Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the heritage-listed building which will reopen to the public on Saturday was integral to the success of the first settlement of Melbourne.

"Melbourne was founded from this great city many, many years ago and this is where the store houses were for people to store a lot of grain and the food before it went to Melbourne," he said.

Weather

There are no warnings. The state forecast is fine apart from local morning fog, inland morning frost and light winds tending northerly.

Tomorrow will be fine apart from some local morning fog and patchy morning frost. Showers are developing on Friday about the north and west but mainly fine elsewhere.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.

As of 9:00am the Pinnacle Road to the summit of Hobart's kunanyi/Mount Wellington was open.

Check the council website for the updated status of Pinnacle Road.
