Tasmania Now: Pollution closes beaches, Chinese leader says WeChat row is a 'misunderstanding'

Foam spotted at Blackmans Bay beach.

Here's what you need to know today:

'Limited impact' after spill

Authorities say tests conducted after a weekend spill of six million litres of untreated sewage and stormwater into Hobart's River Derwent have shown a "low level of contamination", but the public is still being urged to avoid "any contact with this water".

A power failure at Hobart's Macquarie Point treatment plant caused the leak of raw waste into the waterway on Sunday.

On Tuesday, TasWater issued a statement that it had tested at Bellerive Beach, CSIRO wharf, Derwent Rowing Club (north of Tasman Bridge), Regatta Grounds Jetty and Macquarie No 1 Wharf and there had been a "limited impact on water quality".

"All results are comparable to good results typically measured by the Derwent Estuary Program's Recreational Water Quality Program (Beach Watch), which operates over summer," the statement said.

The council said the closure of Blackmans Bay beach was due to a sperate incident which had been rectified.

Search on for new Bothwell GP service

The Central Highlands Council is considering offering special incentives to attract a new medical service provider to Bothwell.

Huon Regional Care, which runs the medical centre, has said it would not be operating the Bothwell Medical Centre beyond October.

If the centre closes, the nearest GPs are in Ouse and Oatlands, more than 35 kilometres away, but neither of those clinics are taking new patients, leaving residents to make the 65km drive to New Norfolk.

The council is trying to find new managers and Mayor Loueen Triffitt said it would examine what incentives could be provided to ensure medical services are maintained.

"I mean, council are very supportive obviously of our community, and we want the best for our community, we do not want to see our members disadvantaged in any way," she said.

Huon Regional Care will not say why it has not renewed its Bothwell contract.

Chinese leader rejects Greens allegation

A Chinese community leader has rejected allegations by the leader of the Tasmanian Greens that a locally generated social media post was inciting violence towards Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters.

Cassy O'Connor on Tuesday wrote to police asking for them to investigate the Tasmanian Council for the Promotion of Peaceful Reunification of China over a post on the Chinese social media platform WeChat, describing it as a "potential incitement to violence".

Today in a statement, TCPPRC president Xin De Wang said the translation of a Chinese character in the social media post had many meanings.

"I believe the cause of this misunderstanding is that, as this character was used in ancient times, one of its possible meanings was 'execute'," Master Wang said.

"In this context, it means to 'denounce', to 'criticise', or to 'advise'. It does not imply violence."

Premier Will Hodgman said while he had not seen the post, it should be investigated if referred to police.

"Clearly it is important that anyone using social media needs to do so in a way that does not incite anything untoward or unsavoury in our community, so those matters need to be properly investigated."

Treasurer hurt skateboarding

Tasmanian Treasurer Peter Gutwein was reportedly limited to office duties during a visit to Launceston by Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg on Tuesday after injuring himself while skateboarding.

Mr Gutwein's office said the "Treasurer suffered a minor skateboarding injury over the weekend".

"There is no lasting damage and he has been working from his Launceston office," the office said in a statement.

Mr Frydenberg said he had spoken to Mr Gutwein on the phone since the skateboarding incident, adding he was told Mr Gutwein had "torn a hamstring" and would be "out of service for a little bit".

Strong winds are forecast today for western coastal waters, with showers also about the west, developing about the north during the afternoon.
