Tasmania Now: 'Badly neglected' 19th century building to get new life as craft brewery

The court heard Mr Mcinerney was taken to hospital for emergency surgery.

Here's what you need to know this morning:

An inquest into the death of a 48-year-old Tasmanian man who was killed by police in 2016 will today hear from the officer who shot him four times.

Robert Mcinerney was shot during a violent confrontation on the night of May 24, 2016, outside his Burnie apartment.

The Cooee man had earlier called triple zero, telling the operator he was going to throw knives at police.

Mr Mcinerney, armed with a range of knives, lunged towards police even after capsicum spray was used against him.

He was then shot four times by Senior Constable William Flynn.

The inquest, which is expected to run until Friday, is also examining whether extra training is required for Tasmanian police.

George Town to become tourist attraction

The new mayor of George Town in northern Tasmania wants to focus on tourism opportunities in the region.

Greg Kieser has been elected to replace Bridget Archer, who became the federal member for Bass during the recent election.

Councillor Kieser said he wanted to make the town "a destination in its own right".

"[It's] to complement the fantastic beaches, the lovely environment we have, our interesting history, the shortly upcoming mountain bike trails, the Regent Square redevelopment and all those wonderful assets that we have," he said.

'Badly neglected' building gets new lease on life

A "badly neglected" 19th century Beaconsfield building has been turned into a craft brewery.

The building was previously home to the local gold mine's chief engineer, but after two years of works it has a new purpose.

Owner Brett Victory said no-one had looked after the building for the past 12 years.

"It had ivy and vines all growing through the roof, in the brickwork, it needed a lot of underpinning — a lot of people said, 'you should just bulldoze it, don't worry about trying to save the house'," he said.
