Tasmania Now: BBQ smoke fine dumped, Great Lake Hotel sold

Here's how the morning unfolded:

Smoke clears on BBQ fine

The Tasmanian Government has dropped a draft rule that could have snagged people enjoying a barbecue.

If adopted, the rule would have seen people whose barbecues emitted smoke for more than 10 minutes — and it was visible from 10 metres away for at least 30 seconds — fined $1,680.

But the Minister for Environment, Elise Archer, says the Government has "listened to the feedback from the community".

In a statement, Ms Archer said she would "ensure the new regulations do not apply to people using appliances, such as a barbeque, pizza oven or outdoor fireplace for cooking purposes only".

Great Lake Hotel finds new owner

Tasmania's Great Lake Hotel in the Central Highlands has sold, after being on the market for two years.

The well-known landmark at Miena includes the pub, accommodation and the general store.

The hotel is often blanketed in snow in winter and survived the bushfires of January 2019.

The hotel's outgoing owner Kaylee Hattinger says despite its remoteness, the hotel is always busy.

"I talk from the time I get up in the morning to until the time I go to bed, so I'm not lonely for any company," she said.

The new owners will take over in September.

Early breeding season puts penguins at risk

Recent surveys have revealed penguin breeding season is already underway in some areas of Tasmania.

Dr Eric Woehler from Birdlife Tasmania said it was the earliest start to the breeding season for many years.

"The penguins are much more at risk from dog attacks than they are in other years, so we are asking all dog owners in coastal communities to make sure their dogs are enclosed at night," he said.

"Last week we did some surveys up in the north and down here in the south east, and we were finding penguins in burrows pretty much everywhere where we looked, it is an unusually early start."

Tassie ranks low for reliable internet

A report on digital inclusion in Tasmania has found residents in the state's north-west and west coast are the least likely to have reliable and affordable access to the internet.

The Tasmanian Council of Social Service report found there were 28 suburbs and towns where more than 20 per cent of homes did not have internet connections, with the worst rates in Burnie and the state's west.

Tasmania has the second-lowest level of digital inclusion in Australia after South Australia.

The report recommends recognising internet access as an essential service, increasing public WiFi in highly disadvantaged areas, and introducing telecommunications concessions for people on low incomes.

The State Government said the report will help it develop local training services to improve digital inclusion.

Wet weekend, potential flooding for west and north

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is forecasting wet and windy weather over the weekend.

There are concerns for potential flooding across the west and north of the state, with up to 100 millimetres of rainfall forecast for elevated areas due to approaching fronts.

There could also be wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres an hour.

Forecast

A strong wind warning has been issued for lower eastern, southern and western coastal waters.

Showers are developing about the north and west, it's mainly fine elsewhere. There'll be north to north-westerly winds about.

A full and updated list of warnings can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology's Tasmanian Warnings summary webpage.
