Live streamed funerals to help people say goodbye to loved ones

Live streamed cremations are being trialled in one part of Merseyside, to allow people to attend services for loved ones they have lost remotely.

Currently, just 15 mourners are allowed at funerals in Wirral, meaning many who want to cannot pay their respects to lost relatives and friends.

To address this, Wirral Council is piloting live streaming at Landican Crematorium this week.

The council believes this is a good way to ensure social distancing is maintained while allowing people to grieve as they wish.

Limiting funeral attendances was one of the council’s moves to implement social distancing before the lockdown began.

On March 20, Wirral Council asked families to invite no more than 30 people to funerals across the borough.

Shortly after the lockdown began, the authority restricted this further - meaning just 15 people could attend.

Similar measures are in place across our region, with other councils also limiting attendance numbers.

Coronavirus: The reasons you are allowed to go outside during lockdown

All of Wirral Council’s leisure services and libraries have been closed down in accordance with national guidelines.

Yesterday, 12 further deaths due to coronavirus were registered by Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust, meaning 112 people have now died from Covid-19 in the borough.

Nationally, another 861 people were confirmed to have died from coronavirus.

That takes the overall UK figure to 13,828.

It was also confirmed yesterday that the lockdown will remain in place for at least another three weeks.
