Martin Guptill hit a 50-ball 97 as part of a 131-run partnership with captain Kane Williamson (53), before Jimmy Neesham cameoed with a 16-ball 45.
Second-gamer Josh Philippe made 45, then Daniel Sams and Marcus Stoinis blasted 92 runs just 37 balls, but both fell before the finish as the Black Caps just held on.
