What a difference a year makes. Last January, Guardian Work reported that private sector job cuts exceeded those in the public sector. Now, 140,000 local government jobs are under threat, and the private sector is expected to pick up the slack.
However, in a survey run by Hays at the end of last year, 22% of public sector workers felt their background would put them at a disadvantage in the private sector. On top of this a staggering 90% of employers felt that public sector experience wasn't important, which is a grim outlook for those facing the axe.
But there is light at the end of the tunnel. In the same survey, 87% of employers felt that candidates from the public sector need to better identify and communicate their skills. A fact that a lot of you have picked up on in a recent Q&A we ran on life after redundancy where our experts were inundated with questions on transferring between sectors.
