Live: NSW Now: Smoke haze hangs over Sydney, light rail project hits milestone

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Smoke haze hangs

Sydney has woken up to another morning of heavy smoke haze, with NSW Health warning people with respiratory problems to stay inside and avoid outside exercise.

The haze blanketed the city yesterday following a number of prescribed burns around the greater Sydney area over the weekend.

The burns pushed the smoke over the city, with light winds and sunny temperatures causing it to linger.

Air quality is still rated as poor and the smoke haze is expected to remain around the Sydney area for the next few days.

Light rail progress

Sydney's light rail testing has extended through Surry Hills to Central Station overnight, the furthest the trams have reached so far.

The trams are able to run through a tunnel under Anzac Parade and along Devonshire Street in Surry Hills now that overhead lines from Randwick to the city have been connected.

The testing was conducted under police escort.

The light rail project has been plagued with controversy, from having its delivery date pushed back 12 months to the overall cost blowing out from $1.6 billion to $2.1 billion.

Two shootings 20 minutes apart

Police are investigating whether two shootings in Sydney's west and north-west overnight were linked.

Officers said several shots were fired into a home and parked car on Yukka Road in Regents Park about 1:00am.

No-one inside the home was injured.

About 20 minutes later a home and car on Charles Street in Ryde were shot at. None of the seven people inside the home were hurt.

NSW Labor leadership nominations open

Nominations for the NSW Labor leadership open today and the main contenders have been hitting the phones hoping to shore up support.

Kogarah MP Chris Minns will throw his hat into the ring, but the ABC has been told that rival MPs have formed a strategic alliance to challenge Mr Minns for the job of opposition leader.

Strathfield MP Jodi McKay and Port Stephens MP Kate Washington have agreed one of them will run for the top job so Mr Minns is not elected unopposed.

NSW Labor has been without a leader since Michael Daley stood aside after the party's state election loss in March.
