Police investigate light rail crash

As police investigate yesterday's tram and truck crash in Sydney's CBD, new figures show there were around 20 collisions with cars and pedestrians in the past year, and 100 near misses.

The official crash statistics obtained by the ABC reveal there were 11 collisions between trams and vehicles and another eight involving pedestrians.

There were also 61 near misses with pedestrians, 31 involving cars, and 16 between trams and cyclists. There have been no fatalities.

Transport NSW chief Howard Collins said yesterday's crash — which happened as the tram was heading towards the final stop near Circular Quay — seemed to have occurred when the truck driver misjudged a turn.

Sussex Inlet evacuated, thousands without power

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) has issued an evacuation order for residents of Sussex Inlet in the South Coast region of New South Wales.

NSW SES said the order impacts about 20 homes in the area, and minor to moderate flooding due to high tide in the morning is expected.

Floodwaters could inundate low-lying properties and cut off road access, the SES warned.

Around 5,000 homes and businesses in the Shoalhaven region remain without power this morning after power lines were damaged in wild weather across the state.

Black Lives Matter protest

Organisers have vowed today's Black Lives Matter rally will go ahead in Sydney, despite court orders blocking it because of COVID-19 concerns.

The Court of Appeal yesterday upheld a Supreme Court decision banning the protest, but thousands of demonstrators have indicated they'll gather in the Domain and risk arrest and fines.

Leetona Dungay, the mother of Indigenous man David Dungay who died in prison in 2015, said protestors had vowed to maintain social distancing and other health and safety measures.

"We're still going to rally and we're going to rally until we get justice, until they get charges and then I will stop rallying," she said.

Bondi says goodbye to iconic mural

An iconic mosaic mural at North Bondi, installed by local school children and artists more than three decades ago, will be replaced after a vote by council.

Waverley Council investigated restoring the mural, which overlooks the children's pool and features Indigenous themes, but found it would cost up to $700,000.

Bondi Mayor Paula Masselos said she was disappointed but council would commission artists to create an new permanent work at the site.

"I am looking forward to seeing what lies in store for that space for the future, Mayor Masselos said.

Alleged hit-and-run spree perpetrator in court

A man will appear in court today charged with a string of traffic offences after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run spree across Sydney earlier this month.

NSW Police said the man's licence was suspended on the spot after he was caught speeding on July 19, but he went on to hit two cyclists, collide with a Mercedes at Woolloomooloo, a Land Rover Sport at Kensington and a WRX at Kensington.

They allege he went on to hit another cyclist in Matraville, hit a Subaru Forrester and an Outback. He did not stop at any of the incidents to offer assistance.

The 35-year-old driver was arrested at a petrol station in Penrith, taken to hospital for treatment, and was later charged with 25 traffic-related offences.
