Live: NSW Now: Cyclist dies trying to avoid swooping magpie, bushfire warnings across NSW

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Man dies trying to avoid swooping magpie

A 76-year-old man riding a bicycle has died after riding off a path while trying to avoid a swooping magpie and colliding with a fence post.

The incident occurred about 8.15am yesterday at Woonona, just north of Wollongong, with the man dying from serious head injuries.

He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

Officers are investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner.

Bushfire threat remains

As temperatures rise and winds strengthen this morning, firefighters in northern NSW are set for another exhausting day with fears more homes will come under threat.

Rural Fire Service Inspector Ben Shepherd said 50 fires were still burning across the state, with 15 uncontained.

He said favourable conditions yesterday allowed firefighters to tackle blazes north-east of Armidale, east of Glen Innes and the Drake fire in the Tenterfield area, ahead of deteriorating conditions today.

After a hot morning, a cool change this afternoon will bring some rainfall, but Inspector Shepherd said it would not be enough to extinguish the flames.

Three teens critical

Three teenagers remain in a critical condition after a single vehicle car crash yesterday in the NSW Central West in which a 17-year-old boy was killed.

The car crashed into a tree and rolled yesterday afternoon at Cowra just after 3pm.

A 17-year-old male passenger died at the scene.

The 18-year-old man driving was taken to Liverpool Hospital, the 17-year-old female passenger was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital and a 19-year-old male passenger was taken to Westmead Hospital.
