Live: NSW Now: Coronavirus rules for community sport tightened, authorities fear mystery cases

Kerry Chant says community sporting teams can't go for dinner after training.

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Community sport rules tighten

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant has tightened the restrictions around community sport for the next six weeks.

Zone, regional, state championships or state-based competitions are banned to reduce "the mixing of participants and staff" between different regions of Sydney and regional areas.

Award ceremonies, end-of-season social gatherings and post-training group dinners are also banned.

Only one parent is permitted to watch team sport where a child requires parental supervision.

Major drug seizure off coast

Authorities say they have intercepted a boat with a large amount of cocaine on it off the NSW coast.

The investigation began after an "international partner" reported the boat's suspicious off-shore behaviour.

The Australian Federal Police, together with the NSW Police and Australian Border Force, intercepted the boat off the coast near Newcastle and arrested the three crew.

The men were yesterday refused bail in a Sydney court.

Authorities fear mystery cases

There have been 552 coronavirus cases in NSW since an infected patron walked into the Crossroads Hotel last month, and 15 of them have authorities "anxious".

Those 15 mysterious infections have NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian worried about how many other people in the community could be unknowingly creating COVID-19 clusters.

"I can't stress enough how virulent the disease is, how difficult it is to control and how much effort goes on behind the scenes," Ms Berejiklian said.

Epidemiologist Gregory Dore said the continued daily cases in NSW had the potential to lead to an "upswing" of major outbreaks.

Body found in fire

Police have found a body in a campervan destroyed by fire in Sydney's west overnight.

Fire crews who were called to Emu Plains shortly after midnight found the campervan alight.

The body was found inside once the fire was put out.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to confirm identity and cause of death.

Northern beaches man 'punched police'

A man has been charged, and firearms and ammunition have been seized, after two police officers were allegedly punched in Sydney's northern beaches.

The officers were on scene with the NSW Rural Fire Service to help control a house fire at Belrose about midday yesterday.

Police found ammunition and two firearms on the scene, seized them and established a crime scene.

When spoken to about the weapons, the 54-year-old occupant allegedly punched two officers in the face.

He was arrested and charged with a string of offences.

NSW business optimism

NSW's peak business organisation says accommodation and food services have experienced an uptick as sectors recover from June's "rock bottom".

Business NSW said there were signs of some economic "green shoots", and attributed them to the relaxation of some trading restrictions.

Confidence was recovering in accommodation and hospitality, recording the strongest turnaround when looking ahead to the upcoming quarter.

The "must-needed relief for the most impacted sectors" meant less pessimism among Business NSW's members, the organisation's Damien Kelly said.
