NSW Now: Cardinal Pell flight leaves for Rome, men in court over $740k Star casino scam

The airplane carrying Cardinal Pell left Sydney on Tuesday night.

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Cardinal Pell departs Sydney for Rome

Cardinal George Pell has left Sydney and is en route to Rome for the first time since being acquitted of his child sex abuse convictions.

NSW Police has confirmed Cardinal Pell left Sydney Airport on board a Qatar Airways flight after 10:00pm last night.

Cardinal Pell was leading the Secretariat of State, set up to reform the Vatican's finances, when he took a leave of absence in 2017 to face charges of child sexual abuse.

The 79-year-old was convicted of sexually abusing two choir boys in the 1990s and had served 13 months of his six-year jail sentence when his conviction was overturned by Australia's High Court in April.

Men charged over $740k casino scam

Two men have been charged after $570,000 in cash and $170,000 in chips were seized as part of an investigation into corrupt betting at a card game at the Star casino.

A 27-year-old man and a 35-year-old man were arrested earlier this month.

Cash and chips were seized at homes in Canley Heights and Ryde.

The men face charges including obtaining financial advantage by deception.

They will face the Downing Centre Local Court today.

Peace deal over ports shipping dispute

Medicines Australia says it is concerned pharmaceutical supplies are being delayed due to an industrial dispute over wages at Sydney's Port Botany.

The Maritime Union of Australia said it would offer a peace deal at a conciliation hearing today at the Fair Work Commission in Sydney.

Stevedoring company Patrick Terminals has asked the commission to intervene in the dispute, which has affected shipping at the port.

Medicines Australia chief executive Elizabeth de Somer said some supplies were getting through.

"Supply is the utmost priority of all medicines manufacturers and there is plenty of supplies on hand at the moment," she said.

"We're working with the Government to ensure that those supplies are carefully managed and the companies are working with their wholesale and distributing partners."

Urgent Toyota Corolla recall

About 6,000 cars have been added to an existing compulsory recall for cars fitted with dangerous Takata airbags.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said the cars are Toyota Corollas, made between 2003 and 2005.

The recall comes after two people suffered injuries from their airbags during a crash in Sydney in August.

Toyota Australia said they were urgently investigating to ensure all affected cars were accounted for.

Telco complaints surge

Customer complaints about being unable to reach their internet or phone companies have increased by 1,500 per cent, a new report has found, with coronavirus shutdowns blamed.

More than 2,000 frustrated customers made an official complaint to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) in the 2019-2020 financial year.

Sydney woman Sue Danks said she lost business when her phone line redirection didn't work.

"Telstra was saying, we can't do anything about it … all our engineers are in India and India is in lockdown."

Rising rents strain JobKeeper recipients

While the pandemic has seen rents become more affordable in the city, the outer suburbs have seen a steady increase in interest, leaving some Australians feeling frightened and financially strained.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, the JobKeeper payment was all that kept Ally Selby and her husband Colin afloat.

But on Monday, the payment was reduced by $300 a fortnight, and the couple's rent is about to increase.

"I went from having a regular weekly income to next to nothing, so that actually kept the roof over our heads, kept the bills paid," Ms Selby said.
