Live: NSW Now: Beaches linked to coronavirus outbreak re-open, police shoot man dead in Sydney's south

Here's what you need to know this morning.

Randwick Council lifts beach ban

A council in Sydney's east will re-open its beaches for exercise from today despite NSW Health singling out the region as a coronavirus hotspot.

The barriers will come down at Coogee, Maroubra and Clovelly — identified by health authorities as high risk for infection last month — after being closed for a month.

Randwick Mayor Danny Said stated he was confident people got the message and would practise social distancing while walking, running, swimming or surfing.

Sunbaking, sitting on the sand or rocks, taking children to play and gatherings for reasons other than exercise are still banned.

Police shoot man dead in Rockdale

Police have shot a man dead in Sydney's south.

NSW Police said officers were called to Rockdale at 11:45pm yesterday to respond to reports about the welfare of a man.

Officers found a 51-year-old man who, allegedly armed with knives and a hammer, threatened police before being shot.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance but died at the scene. Police have launched a critical investigation.

Drive-through testing in south-west Sydney

A drive-through COVID-19 testing facility is opening today in south-west Sydney, as the Federal Government calls for more widespread testing before it eases lockdown restrictions.

Laverty Pathology said its Liverpool facility would be open to any patient who had symptoms and a referral.

The lab's head of microbiology Juliette Holland said results would be available to patients and their GPs via text message.

"The samples are taken and can be transported within a minute or so into the actual laboratory so that gives us a good, quick turnaround time," she said.

NSW Government considers Virgin Australia bailout

The NSW Government says its in discussions with Virgin Australia about a potential bailout to help the airline through the coronavirus pandemic.

The Government said Virgin Airlines, facing a potential financial collapse after most of its flights were grounded, would have to agree to move it headquarters from Brisbane to Western Sydney.

NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet told Sky News it had not made a final decision, but moving the headquarters to the Badgerys Creek airport would create more local jobs.

"If you look at the aerotropolis in Western Sydney, that provides a significant opportunity for Virgin and other airlines to relocate to our state," he said.

CCTV released of jewellery robbery

NSW Police have released CCTV images from a jewellery store in Sydney's CBD where at least $600,000 worth of items were stolen last month.

Police visited the jewellery store on George Street at about 3:20am on March 19 after reports of a robbery.

Authorities said a black Mercedes stopped outside the store before three men, dressed in hooded jumpers and armed with hammers, smashed through the glass door and the display cases.

Diamond bracelets, earrings and necklaces were taken before the men returned to their car and were last seen travelling south towards the Western Distributor and onto the Anzac Bridge.

Campaign for car rego refunds

There have been calls for the NSW Government to refund or reduce vehicle registration fees while the state is under coronavirus lockdown.

More than 3,000 people have signed up to a campaign by consumer network One Big Switch calling for financial relief.

A drop in traffic and rising unemployment rates have been touted as reasons to slash registration costs and insurance premiums.

"Why are we still paying our state governments full price for car registration, which pays for the upkeep of roads, if they're hardly being used?" One Big Switch campaign director Joel Gibson said.
