Live newborn found in Florida dumpster

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Maintenance workers heard crying from a dumpster and when they peered closer, they found the unexpected: a newborn baby girl.

The baby was crying and appeared to have dirt on her Wednesday morning when the workers retrieved her from a dumpster area at a West Boca apartment complex, recalled Shella Dominique, a nurse who had just arrived home from work and heard the commotion underway.

After grabbing the baby, the workers ran for help at the complex. Dominique stepped outside her apartment as neighbors were hollering, "Baby in a dumpster!"

The Sheriff's Office said the baby was found either near or in the dumpster, and said it still was gathering information.

Dominique said she was crushed that the baby had been left behind. "If you would have knocked on my door I would have taken the baby," she said. "Thanks to God this baby is alive."

She watched as the ambulance arrived to take the baby to a hospital.

The child is expected to survive, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said.

Neighbors said investigators were canvassing apartments to talk to potential witnesses, and asking if anyone who lived in the community was recently pregnant.
