Live music will fill Derry's streets during Cathedral Quarter Sounds of the City trail

Live music will fill the streets of Derry during the Cathedral Quarter weekend at the heart of the city centre.

Music Capital will host the Sounds of the City music trail as part of the event on September 4 and 5, showcasing local artists and extending that summer feeling.

Taking place around around London Street, the family-friendly weekend will include circus and street performances from In Your Space Circus's Carnival of Colours, organ recitals in St Columb's Cathedral and children’s activities.

There will also be collaborative outdoor painting at the Centre for Contemporary Arts, arts and craft workshop at the Playhouse, jewellery making demos at Thomas the Goldsmith, stalls and harvest and craft demos at Society Street Market.

The live music is free and those in the Quarter can also enjoy indoor and extended outdoor dining at their favourite cafés as well as the Legenderry Street Food Market on London Street.

There will be live music at Hidden City Café, Walled City Gifts & Coffee, Java and St Augustine’s Café.

Among the acts playing Sounds of the City will be The Bonnevilles, a garage punk blues band from Ireland, who told MyDerry of their excitement at the return of live music after the COVID-19 pandemic.

They said: "We are delighted to be back gigging again. Obviously everyone has been hit hard with the pandemic but the live music industry has been literally decimated.

"We have played a few gigs this month and everyone is saying how happy they are to hear live music again. The sense of relief is palpable.

"To feel the energy is such a raw, beautiful thing and if you have not experienced it in a couple of years you will be stunned at how good it feels when all those memories come flooding back, and they will."

Also joining the bill is local Derry musician, Rachel Craig. She said: "It is great to be performing again because this event is the second time I have performed since the beginning of the pandemic.

"Being able to play music is making me feel like myself again."
