This afternoon Andy Burnham will hold his weekly press conference on the coronavirus situation in Greater Manchester.
Today’s event will follow almost immediately on from the Chancellor’s summer financial statement, which focused on efforts to boost the economic recovery.
Mr Burnham will be reacting to the contents of Rishi Sunak’s announcement as well as providing the latest up-to-date Covid infection rates for each Greater Manchester borough.
The Chancellor’s statement at lunchtime was designed to stave off mass unemployment through a range of measures aimed at young people in particular.
They included £2bn to support unemployed 16-24-year-olds into work, as well as doubling the number of work coaches in Jobcentres and £1,000 incentives for firms who re-hire people who have been on furlough.
He also announced a VAT cut to 5pc in hospitality, hotels and tourism attractions, as well as half-price restaurant vouchers during in August in order to boost the leisure industry.
Mr Burnham will be responding to those measures, having called for a range of moves ahead of today - including Universal Basic Income to protect people at risk of job loss during the pandemic.
He will also be announcing the latest borough-by-borough infection rates for Greater Manchester, which he began publishing last week.
They are more up to date than those nationally and last week showed the majority of areas were seeing rates falling.
Greater Manchester is monitoring that situation closely as it wants to avoid a situation such as that seen in Leicester, where rates rocketed and the government imposed a lockdown.
