'Live long and prosper' Star Trek course among weird selection at Glasgow college

Star Trek, a history of monsters and Batman are just some of the eclectic courses on offer to students this year at a Glasgow college.

Some 40 weird and wonderful evening courses have been launched by Glasgow Clyde College, with a tantalising topic to cater everyone from comic lovers to Mrs Hinch fanatics.

Sci-fi fans can put their knowledge to the test with a ‘Star Trek: The Evolution’ class, while comic enthusiasts will be able to learn about Justice League or Batman in courses about the famous DC characters.

Self-confessed cleaning fans can learn from three professional declutterers, including Dr Zemirah Moffat who will share tips on relationships with possessions and how make the most of an annual clear-out.

Another unusual offering is ‘A History of Monsters’, examining mythical creations such as vampires, zombies and dragons.

The eight-week evening courses have are one of Glasgow Clyde College's most diverse programmes to date, with face-to-face teaching for leisure classes resuming after a one-year pause due to the pandemic.

While some of the courses will still be taking place online, the Love to Learn programme will be restarting classroom-based teaching for the first time it closed its three campuses to students in March 2020.

John Canning, Head of Business Development at Glasgow Clyde College said: “It’s amazing to be able to resume in-person Love to Learn teaching for the first time in over a year, welcoming students back with such a unique collection of courses.

"We’re proud to attract learners of all ages including some students who’ve been in attendance for over 12 years and a few who are regular participants well into their eighties. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn new skills, indulge in a hobby or make some friends.

"I can’t wait to be back in the classroom after a 12-month lull and neither can our lecturers, eager to share their knowledge around subjects which they are so passionate about.

"For many attendees, these courses are a hugely important part of their lives, socialising and learning new things in an informal setting."

Glasgow Clyde College’s Love to Learn courses take place at Langside, Cardonald and Anniesland Campuses, or online.
