Republicans distance themselves from Trump as Biden secures 306 electoral college votes

Several senior Republicans recognise Joe Biden as the president-elect for the first time as the electoral college meets to formalise the results of the 2020 US election.

Speaking after the final votes were tallied, Biden said he had won in what Donald Trump himself had characterised as a "landslide".
