Foreign ministers at the G20 group of nations meeting in Brazil were nearly unanimous in their support for a two-state solution as the only path to peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Brazilian minister hosting the event said on Thursday. Israel launched air strikes on southern Gaza’s Rafah after threatening to send troops into the city. Read our live blog to see how all the day's events unfolded.

Summary:

  • New attempts are under way to reach aceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas that could pause the war in Gaza, a member of Israel’s war cabinet said late Wednesday.
  • Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called on the international community on Thursday to take a more active role towards an urgent ceasefire in Gaza and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during talks at the G20 meeting in Brazil, a Turkish diplomatic source said.

  • A shooting attack on Thursday near a Jewish settlement in the Israeli-occupied West Bank killed one person and wounded eight, Israeli police said. Violence in the West Bank has escalated since the start of the Gaza war to levels unseen in nearly two decades, with hundreds killed in recent months.

  • Leaders of major UN and humanitarian organisations are calling on Israel to provide food and medicine and facilitate aid deliveries to the 2.3 million Palestinians in conflict-wracked Gaza – and on world leaders “to prevent an even worse catastrophe from happening”.

  • At least 29,410 people have been killed and 69,465 wounded in Israeli strikes in Gaza, according to health authorities in the Hamas-run enclave. Around 1,140 people were killed in the Hamas-led October 7 attacks, according to Israeli officials. Around 250 people were taken hostage during the attack and 132 are still in Gaza, according to Israeli figures.

Yesterday's key developments:

  • The Israeli parliament on Wednesday backed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s declaration opposing the “unilateral” recognition of a Palestinian state.
  • The US on Wednesday urged the International Court of Justice (ICJ) not to order the unconditional withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian lands. The ICJ is hearing arguments on the legality of the Israeli occupation this week from an unprecedented 52 countries.
  • Doctors Without Borders on Wednesday condemned in the "strongest possible terms" the killing of two family members of its staff in an Israeli strike on Gaza.
  • Brazil's foreign minister criticised the "paralysis" of the UN Security Council on the wars in Gaza and Ukraine as he opened a G20 meeting.
  • Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz said there were "promising early signs of progress" on a new deal to release hostages from Gaza amid regional talks to secure a pause in the war.
