France bids emotional 'Adieu' to Chirac on national day of mourning

Over 60 world leaders joined mourners in Paris Monday to pay their final respects to France’s former president Jacques Chirac as the country held a national day of mourning for its charismatic former head of state.

  • Former French president Jacques Chirac died on Thursday, September 26, aged 86.
  • Chirac was then buried with full military honours at the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris, during a quiet ceremony for close family and friends on Monday.
  • The funeral mass was held at Saint-Sulpice church in the French capital.
  • A total of 69 world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US president Bill Clinton, attended the services.
