As it happened: Green wave and populist gains as mainstream wanes in EU vote

FRANCE 24 | Exit poll graph at 8pm CET of French voting in European Elections on May 26th 2019.

European Parliament elections wrapped up Sunday night with turnout above 50 percent, a 20-year high. Greens, populists and Brexit were watchwords, while the mainstream EPP on the right and S&D on the left shed seats as the new chamber takes shape.

  • Voters in 21 EU countries were called to the polls on Sunday, including France and Germany, to conclude the four-day EU-wide vote.
  • European Parliament projections indicate considerable losses for the mainstream European People's Party and the Socialists & Democrats, while populists made some gains. Green parties enjoyed significant gains across the bloc.
  • The EPP and S&D are poised to lose their majority for the first time in European Parliament history, making the upcoming race for a new European Commission president all the more complex.
  • More than 400 million voters were eligible to have their say, the second-biggest democratic exercise in the world after elections in India.
