Live: Disruption in Bristol city centre as crowds protest against visit of US President Donald Trump to Britain

Protestors are gathering in the centre of Bristol to protest at the state visit of US President Donald Trump to Britain taking place this week.

Campaigners are gathering in the city centre from 5pm, and are calling on people to travel to London tomorrow for a major national protest too.

The last time the US President visited, last July, in an after-work protest in the middle of Bristol, that culminated in a march through The Centre, Broadmead and Baldwin Street.

This time, it remains to be seen whether people will turn out again in that level of numbers, but motorists are being warned to expect disruption.

Organisers of this protest today, Monday, said they will be 'taking to the streets' after meeting at the Fountains in The Centre.

They said they oppose the US President and his visit to Britain for many reasons.

"We will be taking to the streets opposing Trump's racism, themed areas will feature throughout the protest with climate justice, migrants’ rights, anti-racism, women's rights, LGBT rights, anti-war and trade union rights and many more," said a spokesperson for the protest.

"Theresa May is backing Trump’s toxic politics. It is wrong to give him a state visit. This is a chance to take a stand against right wing ideas on both sides of the Atlantic.

"Together Against Trump is organised jointly by the Stop Trump Coalition and Stand Up To Trump. It brings together a host of campaign groups and trade unions," he added.
