Chiefs win first Super Bowl since 1970 with thrilling comeback against 49ers

The Kansas City Chiefs have won their first Super Bowl in half a century, taking down the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 on the back of three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The Chiefs were trailing 20-10 heading into the final frame of Super Bowl LIV, but clutch drives by superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes saw them find the endzone at the pivotal time.

Kansas City won the fourth Super Bowl, back in 1970, but had not returned to the deciding game of the season until this year's 54th instalment.

The 49ers were in the driver's seat with a 20-10 lead and nine minutes left in the game, only for Mahomes to lead a drive, including a 44-yard pass to Tyreek Hill, that ended in a touchdown for tight end Travis Kelce.

The next set of downs for the 49ers saw Garoppolo come within a few fingertips of being intercepted and ended with an underwhelming punt from Australian Mitch Wishnowsky that left the Chiefs a long journey but plenty of time to reach the endzone.

A 38-yard bomb from Mahomes to receiver Sammy Watkins put them within 10 yards of touchdown territory, which they got when Damien Williams crossed in the corner.

Williams then scooted through for a 38-yard run to touch down one more time for good measure to put the result beyond doubt with 80 seconds of game time remaining.

Mahomes was named Super Bowl MVP, a season after being named MVP of the league.

"We never lost faith, that's the biggest thing," Mahomes said.

"Everybody on this team, no-one had their head down. We believed in each other. That's what we preached all year long."

The vaunted 49ers defence wilted late after three quarters of rattling the dynamic Chiefs' attack.

When the first NFL title in veteran Chiefs coach Andy Reid's two-decade career was clinched by Williams' 38-yard TD run, Chiefs fans exploded into chants of "Andy!" Andy!".

"This is what it's all about," Reid said.

"What a great team, great coaches. Appreciate every bit of it."

Reid, 61, won a Super Bowl ring with the 1996 Packers while in charge of tight ends but has been seeking one as a head coach since being hired by Philadelphia in 1999. The Eagles lost in their only trip to the big game under his tenure in 2005.
