There were fracas, flares, and quick-fire goals in a lively Wednesday evening Australia Cup showdown that gave Canberrans a taste of what an A-League men's team could bring to the capital every week.
It's not often that a team of Western Sydney Wanderers' calibre comes to Canberra, and 1,948 fans braved frosty temperatures on a school night to watch the A-League giants face off against the underdog home team Tigers FC in the round of 32 knockout match.
Despite a brave defensive effort from Tigers FC to go to the half-time break at nil-all and keep their hopes of a miraculous "Cupset" alive, the Wanderers were rewarded for dominating possession and eventually made the most of their opportunities.
A corner of McKellar Park promptly lit up in the Wanderers' travelling supporters section following clinical second half goals by Miguel Di Pizio and Socceroos forward Brandon Borrello.
Emotions boiled over late in the match in a few feisty incidents as the Tigers turned up the pressure, but Western Sydney's two rapid goals within four minutes were enough to seal a 2-0 victory.
Wanderers coach Ufuk Talay was impressed by the talent on show within Tigers FC and said the passion on the pitch and in the stands at McKellar Park on Wednesday night was evidence of the appetite for top domestic men's soccer in Canberra.
"I lived here for six years working at the AIS, and know in the football community there's definitely a lot of passion for the game," Talay told The Canberra Times after the Wanderers' win.
"It'd be fantastic to have a men's side down in Canberra along with the women's program. It would be great and I think there's a lot of desire for that here."
A-League women's team Canberra United currently call McKellar Park home, but there is a vision to bring men's soccer to the capital in the near future too.
Australian Sports Group, run by chief executive Theo Fotopoulos and chairman Morris McAlister, were this week announced as the new owners of Canberra United, and the duo revealed they do have "a twin strategy" to operate a men's A-League team, with a 2028-29 season launch within reach.
Tigers FC coach Ali Efe said after the Australia Cup match that the capital city is overdue for its own A-League men's team.
"We've been having this conversation for years. We get 20,000 to 30,000 people to Socceroos and Matildas games here, so of course Canberra deserves an A-League men's team," he said.
"Hopefully now with new owners it will be better for the Canberra United women and a men's side as well."
As might be expected being the A-League pre-season and with a few new recruits added to the mix, the Wanderers were rusty at times in front of goal, but they still looked a class above from start to finish.
A whopping 75 percent of possession saw the visitors parked in the attacking half in the first 45 minutes.
Tigers FC's defence stood tall in the face of Wanderers peppering their goal with eight shots, but only one on target.
Goalkeeper Willem Lejeune was repeatedly tested, with his fearless run out to smother an attempt by Borrello the highlight.
Tigers FC had their first shot on target right on the stroke of half-time with Aidan Milicevic connecting nicely on a set-piece attempt from just outside the box, however Wanderers' gloveman Tristan Vidackovic was up to the task and the teams walked to the sheds at nil-all.
The second half saw Wanderers pick up where they left off, before they pounced on the Tigers' tiring defence with goals in the 67th and 71st minute to Di Pizio and Borrello.
The Wanderers now advance to the round of 16 in the Australia Cup, while the Tigers crashed out in the club's third round of 32 appearance.
"I'm still very happy with boys' performance," coach Efe said.
"Two mistakes, two goals conceded, but I'm proud of them.
"Wanderers played with a strong lineup, and we defended well. It could be better if we valued the ball more when we had it, but this is another learning moment for our players."
