Live blog: Matts McQuaid and Costello play with Detroit Pistons in summer league opener

Former Spartans Matt McQuaid and Matt Costello are with the Detroit Pistons Summer League team in Las Vegas.

Follow live as the Pistons open play against the Croatian Men’s National Team.

This post will be updated with tweets from our Spartans Wire page as well as additional thoughts.

Matt Costello getting the starting nod. He has four games of NBA experience with the Spurs and has plenty of G-League games under his belt. He played overseas last season.

Costello has done well so far in the post. He should have had a block, but got whistled for a tricky-tack foul. He’s also set up some offense with offensive rebounds. It’s a pretty typical Matt Costello performance thus far.

No surprise on McQuaid. He’s behind at least Khyri Thomas at shooting guard. Thomas is entering a big season for the Pistons and is looking to establish himself as an 82 game NBA player. The Pistons are going to take a long look at him this summer.

Check that. McQuaid didn’t check in. It looked like McQuaid but was Pistons 2nd round pick Deividas Sirvydis.

We haven’t seen McQuaid yet, but Costello was clearly super excited to be reunited with him.

A little surprised we didn’t see McQuaid in the first half. McQuaid is one of three active Pistons to not enter the game in the first half. It’s a good example of where he sits in this organization and the climb he’ll have to make.

It’s true and more interesting than anything either of the Matts have done so far this game.

I’m with Brewster.

Still no McQuaid. We’re getting sad.

On the other hand Costello has done some nice things including a nice two-man action on a Bruce Brown bucket. Costello is anchoring the Pistons defense in the post. It’ll be interesting to see how his summer league progresses.

*sigh* … not yet.

At least we’ve got the other Matt.

It looked as if McQuaid wouldn’t get any minutes and then…

McQuaid checked in the 59 seconds left and the Pistons up 15.

Tough start for McQuaid, but he’ll get minutes as summer league moves along. Good work by Costello as he looks to latch on to an NBA roster. He’ll have a shot moving forward.
