The Deputy Prime Minister has ended the day unable to silence questions from those opposite about his position within the Cabinet, in the wake of his admission of a relationship with his former media adviser.
Even some of his Coalition colleagues privately conceded his reputation had been damaged "beyond repair", and urged the Nationals to recognise the problem.
