What’s new: China’s Vice Premier Liu He spoke with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen via video link Wednesday about the relationship between the world’s two largest economies.
The two sides exchanged views on the state of macroeconomy and on cooperation between the U.S. and China, as well as how to work together with other countries, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.
The background: The virtual meeting followed Liu’s phone conversation last week with U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai, marking the first time the both sides’ lead trade negotiators have spoken since U.S. President Joe Biden took office in January.
“In a spirit of mutual equality and mutual respect, the two sides conducted candid, pragmatic and constructive exchanges,” the Chinese commerce ministry said in a statement at the time.
