Little Scots boy with cancer who asked for 'A Broony' Scott Brown-inspired haircut celebrates birthday with cake bigger than him

A brave schoolboy battling cancer who asked for 'A Broony' haircut inspired by his Celtic idol Scott Brown has celebrated his sixth birthday with a massive 5ft superhero cake.

Ace Ward, from Irvine, Ayrshire, captured our hearts back in March when we told how he overcame his fear of losing his hair

after rounds of chemotherapy by saying 'I'll have a Broony!', just like his bald Hoops hero, when his mum asked him about shaving it all off.

Little warrior Ace, who has B-Cell Acute Lymphobastic Leukaemia turned six this week and was delighted with his giant birthday cake which included of the youngster's favourite characters including Hulk, Ninjago, Deadpool, Ironman and Captain America and even stood taller than him.

His doting mum Vicky Ward, 34, said the family wanted to make a huge fuss of Ace's birthday after all he has been through.

She told the Record: "Ace turned six last week and he has been doing amazing.

"He's been on a chemo hold for three weeks now but will start his fourth and final block of treatment next week.

"He's a little bundle of energy and enjoyed every bit of his birthday week and he wanted a very special cake that just had to be bigger than him."

The youngster was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphobastic Leukaemia in January this year and has had to undergo gruelling chemotherapy to fight the disease.

In June his devoted mum Vicky revealed the schoolboy was in remission after responding well to his treatment.

The news was a relief to all Ace's family including Vicky, dad Brian, 37, brother Harrison, nine and sister Hayley, seven, especially when the family were finally allowed to have Ace at home during lockdown.

The Daily Record earlier told how Ace was distraught at the prospect of losing his blonde spiky hair after his treatment - but as soon as he realised he would be the same as his Celtic hero, he was delighted.

At the time Vicky said: “Ace loves Celtic and Scott Brown is his absolute favourite player, he loves him.

“When his hair started to fall out it was coming out in lumps on his pillow and even falling on to his plate when he was eating dinner.

“I just asked him if he wanted me to shave it all off. He said yes straight away then smiled and said 'I'll have a Broony’.”
