Little Mix's Jade Thirlwall says social media abuse needs to be tackled

Jade Thirlwall has opened up out about the effect social media trolling has had on her mental health.

The Little Mix star says online abuse needs to be tackled amid growing pressure on the showbiz industry to offer more support to stars.

The 26-year-old singer spoke passionately about the cause during an exclusive chat with Mirror Online at the British LGBT Awards.

She told us: "I think we've all suffered in some way with our mental health and I think, you know, one, it comes with this industry and two, it comes with living in this day and age with social media and online trolling and there's not being enough done about that.

"Social media and online abuse has a massive impact on young people and the LGBT community so it's something that needs to be tackled properly.

"It's very strange, I think I've learned to have a thick skin. Jesy [Nelson] is doing a documentary that's coming out soon that's all about mental health and how she suffered being in this industry and the public eye.

"It's going to be amazing and really important and it'll really go in on the effects that it can have on people."

At Friday night's ceremony, Jade collected the Change Makers award on behalf of her band, who triumphed on X Factor in 2011.

She said: "I feel really honoured, I'm so happy for me and the girls but to be honest it feels really weird to be awarded for just being a decent person and doing the right thing.

"But it feels amazing to be recognised for that and we intend to always be good allies to the LGBT community.

"Being an ally really isn't that hard, it's just about believing in equality and doing your bit. Go to the marches, sign petitions and do your bit and support people. Raise awareness and educate yourself and do the right thing, I think there's still a long way to go for the LGBT community and they need allies to help make that change quicker."

Jade also revealed that Little Mix are working on new music, and we could be getting a new song very soon.

She told us: "We've got new music coming out in the next month or so, it's really exciting. Obviously next we've got the tour so we've got loads coming up and we're feeling stronger than ever."
