Little Mix fans praise 'brave' Jesy Nelson for 'heartbreaking' BBC documentary about online abuse

Jesy Nelson has been heavily commended for speaking out in a BBC documentary about online abuse.

The Little Mix singer was seen recalling the devastating moment she sunk into a deep depression and attempted to take her own life.

Jesy bravely spoke in the doc, Odd One Out which aired on Thursday, about the vile abuse she received following her X Factor win in 2011.

The 28-year-old recalled how just hours after storming to victory with bandmates Perrie Edwards, Jade Thirwall and Leigh-Ann Pinnock on the ITV talent show, the comments began - and so did her own belief in them.

"The whole world had an opinion on me, and they weren't good ones," Jesy said in the doc.

"From the minute them comments started, it become the worst time of my life. It literally consumed every part of me."

The singer also harrowingly recalled how the fat-shaming, amongst other negative comments, led to her starving herself for a week leading up to a return performance on the X Factor in 2016 so that people would comment on 'how much weight she had lost'.

From this point, Jesy says her severe depression "spiralled out of control" and a tweet from the controversial Katie Hopkins which described her as a "chubber" led her to thinking: "What's the f***ing point?"

Fellow stars, fans and even non-fans took to Twitter in their droves to praise the popstar for being brave and honest in the emotional and powerful documentary.

One said: "Just watched that #JesyNelsonOddOneOut documentary and my heart is broken, I resonated with her the whole way through."

"I am by no means a Little Mix fan, but I am a ‘Be More Kind’ fan and this documentary is literally breaking my heart- it’s literally aching," tweeted a second.

Another added: "Jesy Nelson's documentary is absolutely heartbreaking. I've never wanted to hug someone so much!! She’s such a brave, beautiful inspirational woman! Talking about mental health is SO important."

Eastender actress Tilly Keeper said: "I implore you to watch Jesy Nelson's documentary #OddOneOut Brave, inspiring and necessary in today's technological and social media crazed climate."

"My god, this doc. Jesy, you a total star," reigning Strictly champ Stacey Dooley added. "To everyone who consistently digs out other people online, your behaviour has such serious consequences. We all need to make a conscious effort to just be a bit kinder."

Mcfly star Harry Judd also commented: "#oddoneout Heartbreaking documentary but so important. Well done Jesy x."

Many have also demanded that the hour-long doc is shown in schools and colleges.

One viewer said: "Jesy Nelson's ‘Odd One Out’ is so hard to watch but it needs to be shown in every single school and college in the UK."

"This Jesy Nelson documentary needs to be shown in every single school and college up and down the country to show that words can break even the most strongest looking people and ruin so many lives. Just be kind," commented another.

A third added: "Everyone, every age, should be made to watch this... so powerful #JesyNelson #OddOneOut."

"I would suggest that every secondary school in the country should show this in classes tomorrow. If it saves one life it’s worth it," said another.

Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out is available on BBC Three on iPlayer.
