Little-known iPhone feature lets you know when snow's on the way - and when it'll stop

The UK is being gripped by a cold snap this week, and while Monday morning saw snowfall in parts of the southwest including Dartmoor and Devon, extended warnings for snow and ice have been applied for parts of Scotland until Wednesday.

And as we know all too well that snow tends to grind life to a halt with road chaos and train delays, wouldn't it be ideal if we could have real-time weather updates that told us exactly when snow was due to fall - and when it would stop?

If you have an iPhone, it turns out you can do just that thanks to a little-known feature hidden within the weather app.

According to Fonehouse, iPhones can send you real-time alerts that will tell you just a few minutes before it's due to rain or snow, so you can switch up your travel plans or pack an umbrella if you need to.

What's more, you'll also get a notification when the snow or rain is about to stop, so you know you'll be safe to head out without getting caught off guard.

To turn on the feature, you need to head to your weather app, and then tap the three-line icon in the bottom right corner of the screen. From there, you should tap the circle icon with the three dots in the top right corner.

Head to 'Notifications', and under 'Current location' slide the switch next to 'Next-Hour Precipitation' to the on position. Then you can tap done, and you're all finished.

If you have multiple locations added to the weather app, you can turn on alerts for each one in the same way.

Speaking about the little-known trick, CEO of Fonehouse Ben Branson said: "iPhones are packed full of technology with great features, settings and shortcuts. But the fact that they have so many features, means it can be impossible to know everything they are capable of.

"Whether you're new to Apple, or just want to learn more about what your iPhone can do, we hope this hidden tip is useful and can help you make the most out of your smartphone."
