Little boy steals the show from Pope Francis on stage at the Vatican

A young boy stole the limelight away from the Pope today when he climbed onto a stage at the Vatican before tinkering with the spear and glove of a Swiss Guard.

The boy clambered onto the platform before running around and grabbing the guard.

Vatican gendarmes stood and let the young boy run around as monsignors read out a catechism lesson in various languages.

The young boy's mother ran on stage to retrieve him after he left the audience in the Vatican's Paul VI Hall.

Pope Francis told the crowd that the boy was hearing and speech impaired, before adding: "But he knows how to communicate, to express himself."

"And he has something that made me think: He's free. Undisciplined-ly free, but he's free.

"It made me think, am I so free before God?"

He then prayed for the boy.

Pope Francis has been pontiff since Pope Benedict XVI's resignation in 2013.

He is the first pope from outside Europe since Gregory III in the 8th Century, and chose his name in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.
