Little boy's amazing act of kindness in memory of his mum moves couple to tears

A 10-year-old boy's amazing act of kindness in memory of his late mother moved a couple to tears.

Ashleigh Perks, 25, and partner Jack Nixon, 26, were enjoying a meal at The Oak Tree in Chester when Harvey Hughes-Sharps, and his father walked to their table and passed over an envelope.

The couple, from Flintshire, Wales, discovered the young boy had contributed £5 towards their dinner on Sunday and explained in a handwritten note it was in memory of his late mother.

Harvey, from Guilden Sutton, Chester, was four years old when his mum Rachel Hughes passed away after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which then spread to her lungs and brain.

The boy's family always go out for a meal on the anniversary of his mum's passing and for the past three years he has carried out this act of kindness.

Early years educator Ashleigh said: "Jack and I went out for a meal and as we were tucking into our mains, a little boy and his father walked over to our table - we didn't know who they were.

"His dad said 'do you mind if he gives you something?' and the little boy handed Jack an envelope labelled 'for you'.

"As they were walking away his dad then said to his little boy 'this is the lucky couple' and as they walk off his dad said to his little boy 'that is your good deed of the year'.

"We were left a bit confused, but when Jack opened the card to read it he looked up at me in shock.

"He passed it over to me to read and I got all choked up and burst into tears, I couldn't believe what I was reading.

"We couldn't finish our meal, it really touched us."

Harvey's card to the couple included five £1 coins and read: "In memory of my mum who passed away six years ago today.

"She was a very loving, caring and kind person who worked as a social worker.

"Please accept some money towards your food bill. Have fun with your family."

Harvey's stepmum, Katherine Robinson-Sharps, 40, said: "Every year we always celebrate Rachel's life on her birthday and on the day she passed away.

"We go out for a meal to remember her and for the last three years Harvey has picked a couple to give a card to.

"This year he gave it to a couple that were so lovely and supportive and he felt brilliant - it gave him a huge confidence boost."

After Harvey gave them the card, Ashleigh and Jack went to find him and his family to thank him and took a photo to share only which quickly went viral.

Ashleigh said: "We wanted to share what had happened to show others what a lovely and thoughtful thing Harvey did, he's a special little boy and so brave.

"He was quite shy and reserved, but spoke about how excited he was for Christmas.

"Harvey's stepmum told us that he had done this for the last couple of years in memory of his mum, who was a loving and caring social worker that did a lot for others.

"He wanted to give back to people in memory of his mum.

"I can't believe how viral my post gone, the comments are so positive.

"His mum would be so proud and he's a credit to his family and we cannot thank him enough.

"You hear stories like these but never expect it to happen to you.

"It just melts your heart - we will remember that day for the rest of our lives because it was a special moment and we are very grateful to have met him."

In 2016, on his 7th birthday, Harvey gave up birthday presents to raise money for The Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Backford, Chester, where his mum was cared for, by asking friends and family to donate to them instead of purchasing him a gift.

His donations even led him to win an award from the hospice, where he was presented a glass trophy with a picture of him and his mum.

Katherine said she has shown Harvey all of the comments and he was pleased, if a little surprised, it got such a big response.

She added: "We're thrilled that Harvey picked Ashleigh and Jack.

"They were both really lovely with Harvey and we are so happy that we've connected with them. We hope to keep in touch with them.

"For Harvey, it was just a normal thing to do and he find it amazing that people are commenting on the post, it's just lovely.

"We have talked about how he is passing on his Mum's love for him through his act of kindness.

"He's taught me a lot about life and brings out the best in people, he is an amazing little boy."

Jonathan Sharps, 51, added: "Harvey is not the sort of person who seeks to be the centre of attention, but I am absolutely sure he will quietly make such a positive difference in this world. He is very kind and full of fun, and we are so proud of him."
