Little boy who 'turned yellow' meets his hero after a life saving organ transplant

A little boy has met his athletic hero after a life saving organ transplant.

James Harcourt, from Childwall suffered from sudden liver problems four years ago which "turned him yellow".

The 11-year-old was rushed from Alder Hey hospital to specialists in Leeds where he went under the knife just weeks after becoming ill.

Four years on, James is now a keen athlete and a member of Wavertree Athletics club.

The schoolboy met his hero, Olympian Usain Bolt in June at the Soccer Aid football game which was organised through Make A Wish Foundation.

His dad, Edward told the ECHO : "He is doing amazingly well since his transplant.

"We nearly lost him, it was very severe and he turned yellow.

"The doctors said the only way to save him was to enlist him for human donation.

"We know nothing about the donor, only that he was a young male from the South West of England."

The Liverpool FC fan was given a private half-hour chat with the Olympian and posed for photographs.

As a parting gift Bolt signed the young boys athletic shoes.

The gold medal winner also gave tips to the schoolboy for his upcoming competition at the World Transplant Games in Newcastle this month.

After meeting James the ex-distance runner tweeted calling the little boy "inspirational".

After the chat, James was invited to watch the Soccer Aid game where Bolt marked former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher .

James' dad stressed the importance of organ donation and said: "He's not just surviving but thriving.

"James will have to be on medical protocol for the rest of his life and will have to be careful, but he's living a normal healthy life."
