A young boy who was found on the M6 after being separated from his parents didn't know which country they were in.
Police say he had illegally entered the UK and said that it's hard to even imagine how scared someone would be in that position.
The youngster, who does not speak English, was taken to a safe place with food and water until social services can intervene.
A tweet from the Central Motorway Police Group on Wednesday night said: "Officers sent to reports of a pedestrian on the M6 Birmingham.
"We found a young boy who had illegally entered the U.K.
"He was split up from his parents a few days ago, and doesn’t know which country they’re in.
"As police, our priority is ALWAYS to protect life.
They added: "It’s impossible to imagine how scared someone would be, not knowing where they are, not knowing where their parents are, unable to speak the language.
"We’ve taken him to a place of safety with food and water until social services can come and take him to care."
People took to social media to express their concern for the little boy, who has not been named.
"Wow! That’s awful! Poor kid must be scared stiff," one said on Twitter .
Another wrote: "Excellent work. At least the poor boy is safe and warm. Must have been terrifying!!"
Many thanked the police for the good work they do and for keeping the boy safe.
