It is the 1960s. Denzel has come to London from Jamaica to start a new life but discovers life is hard. He has failed to find work, despite being ever ready and having a pair of pristine white overalls neatly folded in his bag.
Then a mysterious man in an overcoat tells him about a job that is a dead cert, all he has to do is go to the very last lamppost and wait there. At the lamppost amid a shroud of fog he finds Ruby, also down on her luck, and in possession of the same information. Only Ruby is quite certain what the job involves - she and Denzel will be making clouds with the angels.
You certainly should not leave this one just to the children. It is so delightful that adults will want a slice of it too. Transposed from Italy and part of the Young Europe season that is being co-produced by Company of Angels and the Polka, Little Angels is a joyous two-hander for the over-eights that combines the metaphysics of Waiting For Godot with earthy comedy and a beguiling belief in the transforming power of the imagination.
Denzel and Ruby may merely be the victims of a con-man, they might possibly be dead, or it could be that God and the angels are indeed a bit short-handed and in need of a little help.
It matters not a jot that you never find out for certain, for in a brief hour this little show takes you on a marathon journey in which Denzel and Ruby discover each other and a free-flying freedom that transcends the daily disappointment of their lives.
I believed every word and you and the kids will too because John Retallack's production is performed with affecting simplicity and total conviction.
