Litter project grant for Coatbridge pupils

Pupils at a Coatbridge school will be helping to tackle litter in their local area after receiving an environmental grant to help them take action.

Sikeside Primary is one of just 25 schools across Scotland to have been selected as recipients in this year’s ninth annual international Litter Less campaign.

The £200 funding can be used for projects to tackle litter at school and in the wider community, such as purchasing litter-picking equipment, while taking part also helps participating schools work towards their international Eco-Schools green flag award.

Organisers say: “Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, the schools will be adapting their activities and encouraging pupils to carry out local litter surveys or litter picks with their own households as part of their outdoor exercise.”

Daniel Barrie of Keep Scotland Beautiful – which runs Litter Less on behalf of the Foundation of Environmental Education, with the campaign being sponsored by the Wrigley Company Foundation – said: “We’re thrilled that we are once again able to support children and educators.

“The successful schools will be able to use the £200 grant to buy materials needed to run their anti-litter campaigns, to support local family clean-up events as part of their daily exercise, and to assist educators to understand the issues and solutions.”
