Listeners in tears over Christy Dignam's 'heartbreaking' interview with Ryan Tubridy

Christy Dignam fans have sung Ryan Tubridy's praises for an outstanding interview with the legendary Irish singer.

The Aslan lead man recently entered into palliative care after he was diagnosed with amyloidosis, which is a rare form of blood cancer.

Christy gave what he believes may be his final ever interview to Ryan Tubridy on his RTE Radio 1 show this Monday morning, RSVP Live reported.

In the interview, Christy said there are times he experiences feelings of fear because "nobody wants to die".

He said: "When I first got diagnosed, I remember praying, I was like 'please, just give me 10 more years.'

"And that 10 years are up now and you're kind of saying, 'I know I only asked for 10 but you couldn’t throw another 10 in there could you?"

He added that he sees palliative care as a "conveyor belt up to heaven".

On his spiritual sense, the Dubliner said: "I believe we are all spiritual beings in some sense or other. I remember there used to be an old saying… that 'religion is for people who want to go to heaven, spirituality is for people who have been to hell.'"

He admitted that he really identifies with the tough times in life, which bring things into a sharper focus.

RTÉ listeners were in awe of the interview, with texts flooding in to thank Christy for his honesty, bravery and what he has done for the Irish music scene.

"Amazing voice, superb interview. Wishing Christy and his family great peace," one person said.

Another text: "Listening to Christy one of my heroes. I particularly want to thank him for showing the horror of drug addiction. His story shows a wonderful man who has come through with great resilience and bravery. I wish him peace and love."

Another texter said their heart was broken listening to the pair chat.

"What a wonderful and brave interview with Christy, I would like to thank him for sharing his soul as well as his music. Sending much love and prayers," Ryan read out loud from another texter.

One person described Christy as so "down to earth."

A final person said: "Amazing interview with an amazing man. A true legend in every way."

Before airing the interview, Late Late host Ryan paid a heartfelt tribute to Christy.

The interview led to a deluge of texts from listeners, prompting the host to say: "The response is phenomenal .There's so much love for Christy."

Tubs told listeners ahead of the broadcast: "It was meaningful, it was profound, it was sad, it was funny - it was Christy."

Tubridy went to Christy's house in north Dublin for the interview, where Christy is receiving end of life care, at home with wife Kathryn and daughter Kiera.

Ryan said: “We went over to have a chat for what he described as possibly his last interview.

“We’ve often joked about him coming into the Late Late Show ‘for the last time’ about five times in a row.

“So I hope on this occasion he’s wrong again. He is a remarkable person. He is in fine fettle.

“Over coffee, and probably about an hour in his front room of his house, we chatted about it all.”

Ryan continued: “And to give you a description, the front room of his house has now become his new bedroom.

“There’s a hospital bed which he brought in which he sits on the side of that.

“He was wearing his hoodie and his jeans and he looked like he might as well be going out to a gig. He looked match fit.

“You might hear some different sounds on this interview,” Ryan warned.

“You might hear the sound of an occasional machine puffing in the corner, you might hear Christy struggling for a little bit of breath on occasion but not much.

“He seemed to be in as good health as is possible.

“Most importantly you’ll hear an astute person - somebody who has thought about it all.

“Somebody who has knocked on the door of death before.

“And somebody who has done essentially an audit of his life.”

Rocker Christy moved listeners by speaking openly on what he is facing.

He said: "I'm happy, I get very sad, and I get very scared,

"Until my heart stops, I am going to wring out every little drop of life that I have."
