Listeners in tears as grieving Scots woman wins huge cash prize on radio

Listeners tuning into a radio show were left in floods of tears after a grieving Scots widow scooped a massive cash prize.

Clyde 1 's DJ Garry Spence was hosting the daily Cash Register segment, where fans of the show are given the chance of winning life-changing sums of money.

And there wasn't a dry eye on social media last night after Mary Carr took home a whopping £102k.

It came after her husband Steph tragically passed from Covid on October 13 this year, leaving their family absolutely devastated.

After realising her life was about to change, Mary burst into floods of tears and had to be supported by her son in law while asking if 'this is a joke'.

In the audio clip posted by the station on Twitter, she tells the host: " It's been a really trying two months, my husband passed away really tragically on the 13th of October with Covid and this is really just

"This better not be a wind-up. Is this a wind up?

Mary then continues "I can't tell you what this means" before bursting into tears again.

Mary's daughter, Louise Carr, commented on Clyde 1's Twitter post thanking Garry for the way he comforted her mother.

Louise replied: "Garry thank you being so nice to my mum and husband on the phone (our little girl was there too and couldn't believe it) xx"

The host responded: "So sorry again for your loss. She deserves this and I can’t wait to speak to her again. Love to you all x"

After the call aired, Garry tweeted in response to the segment: "Lost for words. So many messages.

"Well done to Mary. No amount of money can bring back loved ones but what a difference it has clearly made. The Cash Register."

Social media users were reduced to tears listening to this heart-warming segment on the radio, and were absolutely delighted for Mary.

One person wrote: "This is absolutely tremendous. Stephen Carr was my cousin and Mary and the family are so deserving of this. God bless them."

While another said: ""Never been so thrilled for a stranger to win life changing money. Congratulations Mary and all the family. So sorry for your loss.

"I hope this gives you a wee chunk of sunlight after a dark few months. I’m so happy for you"

And a third commented: "So happy for Mary. Gary was so good handling the call and calming her down and being so compassionate with her.....

"I was crying in the car listening.... God bless you Mary"
