Listen to this - it redefines what we mean by a car crash broadcast

Listening is believing. Even the kindest of RTE presenters couldn’t save him...

This interview isn’t so much a car crash as a motorway pile-up. It involves an Irish politician who was interviewed on RTE, Ireland’s main broadcaster, about the launch of a new political party, Renua Ireland.

Terence Flanagan was elected in 2007 as a member of Fine Gael for a constituency called Dublin Bay North, but he was expelled from the party in July 2013 for voting against an abortion reform bill.

So he hopped aboard Renua following its launch by another former Fine Gael politician, Lucinda Creighton, who was also expelled from the party in similar circumstances.

Unfortunately, as the interview makes clear, he had probably not grasped his new party’s raison d’etre.

I cannot imagine a British interviewer being as kind as RTE’s Mary Wilson, who happens to be one of the best of Ireland’s many good radio presenters.

She acted like a nursemaid, but nothing could induce him to speak...
