Listen to the silliest and least appropriate 999 calls to West Yorkshire Police

A broken toenail and a randy dog were among the silliest and least appropriate reasons for calling 999.

West Yorkshire Police has compiled recordings of time-wasting calls to the force emergency number which should only be used to report a crime in progress or a life-threatening situation.

However, one caller thought it was acceptable to call 999 to report a puncture, while another rang to report that he had a broken toenail.

Meanwhile, a man rang the emergency number to complain that a shop declined his £3 card payment and another lamented that her benefits were not been deposited into her bank account.

Apparent prank calls also included a child asking: ''Can you buy me a pack of cigarettes?"

And in another time-wasting call a dog owner complained: "I was walking my dog this morning and this woman just let her staffie out onto the common ground. No collar. And it's been chasing my dog, trying to hump him."

West Yorkshire Police say they receive, on average, 120 non-emergency calls a day to the 999 number.
