It’s been 14 years since the release of D’Angelo’s influential, neo-soul masterpiece Voodoo - and following a spell of European dates, occasional US shows and some rather vague studio footage dotted throughout the past few years - rumours of the funk, soul and R&B enigma’s full return to music naturally began to circulate.
Putting an end to years of anticipation, Red Bull Music Academy and Afropunk have this weekend announced details of a New York listening party for his third album proper, Black Messiah. Ahead of its release - apparently scheduled for 16 December - the artist has unveiled the first taste of this new material: Sugah Daddy. As part of the Red Bull 20before15 project, it was created by the artist and his new band, The Vanguard, which D’Angelo has previously vaunted as a “louder band, it’s a harder band... definitely more rock.”
First aired live on their 2012 tour, the track is now available to hear in the player below. So take a listen and let us know if you think it’s been worth the wait.
