It’s been over 10 years since Jeff Lynne’s ELO released an album. In the intervening decade they have been “critically rehabilitated from guilty pleasure to national treasure”, becoming one of the most sampled acts in hip-hop history – 44 and counting, from Young Jeezy to Brain Dead according to this blog. In 2014, they put on a triumphant reunion show in Hyde Park, London.
It makes sense then, that after the revival comes a revived interest in music-making, and Lynne soon returned to the studio to make the album Alone in the Universe, released on 13 November.
“I felt that again when we played Hyde Park. I remember thinking how all these years later, the songs somehow mean even more to people, and to me, too,” says Lynne.
“I could hear the audience singing so loudly that I almost couldn’t hear myself. It was a beautiful thing, and it was the best concert I’ve ever been in – literally, my favourite show ever. That definitely makes me feel a little bit less alone in this universe.”
Before its release, we have the premiere of When the Night Comes. The track started life as a demo recorded on cassette, featuring a few basic chords, before it was developed into the melancholy cosmic groove it is today.
