Listed villa where members of same dynastic family lived for nearly a century goes on sale

A villa that remained in the same Paisley family for 96 years has hit the market.

The special property, in leafy Thornly Park, is packed with the stylish design features from the past that has now made it C-listed.

Wilmar was built for wealthy William and Margaret Clark in 1908 - and their family continued living there until 2004.

Agents Robb Residential say the five-bedroom property is an “important part of Paisley’s architectural and social heritage”.

The Clark family - part of the thread dynasty - finally sold it to the present owners in 2004 and it is now on rare sale again at offers over £750,000.

Architect WD McLennan was a contemporary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and kept the outside plain, but littered the inside with Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts styles.

Carolyn Campbell, a senior negotiator with Robb Residential, said from the outside you would not realise the “idiosyncratic” interior.

She said: “Wilmar remained in the original family’s ownership until 2004, when it was bought by the current owners.

“All original features are beautifully preserved including listed stain glass, wood panelling and carpentry, feature fireplaces in all rooms, and light fittings designed by the originalarchitect.

“This home is truly unique and intact in every respect, has been upgraded to a very high standard and provides for a high standard of modern day family living.”

The second owners brought it into the modern age and added a garden room.

It sits in swish South Avenue, is surrounded by large homes and gives views to the countryside south of Paisley.

The lounge has the original copper surround fireplace and there is a “Jack and Jill” door to the butler’s pantry.

Carolyn added: “A raised paved patio area provides excellent space for summer furniture, alfresco entertaining and sundowners.”
