List of the 79 streets set to get new signs in Gipton and Harehills

Two hundred street signs across 79 streets in Gipton and Harehills have been restored “to former glory”.

Councillors Arif Hussain, Salma Arif and Kamila Maqsood, from the two wards, have come together with the Inner East Housing Advisory (EHA) Panel to fund the refurbishment project.

A local contractor who started the work in May 2020 has gone around the east Leeds streets restoring the cast iron signs which are an important historical feature of the area.

To restore the signs, GME Painting was used to remove rust and flaking paint using specialist equipment such as a needle-gun and repaint them, following strict social distancing guidelines.

Labour Councillor for Gipton and Harehills, Arif Hussain said: “Councillors Salma Arif, Kamila Maqsood and I have long been concerned that some of the street signs in our ward needed repair.

"Some were no longer readable and this caused problems for anyone trying to identify the street name, especially those in the emergency services, making deliveries or visiting friends and family”.

It has cost £27,000 to restore the signs, at £145 each.
