List of new pub and restaurant rules in Ireland which have seen major backlash

A number of new rules are being brought forward for pubs and restaurants with one causing a major backlash.

The new legislation was overwhelmingly supported in the Dail which has led to anger among the food and drink sector.

The main new rules is that places that serve food must keep a record of one person per group's name and phone number as well as what everyone orders - and these records should be kept for 28 days.

The second less controversial rule is to allow premises to open as late as 11.30pm.

These add to all the social distancing guidelines and other measures pubs and restaurants have already been adhering to.

The directive from Health Minister Stephen Donnelly was branded “Stasi-like” on Thursday night by a Government TD.

Sligo deputy Marc MacSharry blasted the plan in a group message to the Taoiseach, ministers and the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.

The message, seen by the Irish Mirror, states: “This is a step away too far and I appeal to all of you to urgently reverse this authoritarian and unnecessary nonsense.

“I appeal for immediate intervention to alter the ‘Stasi’ guidelines issued to restaurateurs and gastric publicans whereby it will now be required to take details of who is in and now incredibly what they have had to eat."
